Studio Veldacademie aims to contribute to a future-proof and inclusive development of Rotterdam. Students are offered an interdisciplinary and practice based design studio on site, where you get to meet local stakeholders such as citizens, entrepreneurs, housing corporations, project developers, researchers and municipal officials. Within this studio students can make a meaningful contribution to the city of Rotterdam.
FOCUS AND APPROACH
As a student, you have a unique opportunity to work on site in the neighbourhoods of Rotterdam and get to know the daily life in the city’s urban environment. This studio facilitates students fascinated by societal challenges, an interdisciplinary research and design approach and who are willing to work in the field, together with multiple stakeholders. Studio Veldacademie was founded in 2008 in collaboration with the Municipality of Rotterdam and TU Delft and has been working with several other educational and research institutes since, such as Erasmus University and Hogeschool Rotterdam. At our studio students from a diverse range of studies work together on social and spatial questions.
PROGRAMME
MSc 2 – Design for a resilient Rotterdam (only spring semester)
The MSc 2 spring studio ‘Design for a resilient Rotterdam’ invites students to explore, examine and discover how different communities live together in neighborhoods Bospolder and Tussendijken. The design task implies a mobile, easy-to-build architectural intervention. The local community is involved in the development, occupation and appropriation of the design intervention. MSc 3 + 4 – On-site graduation studio Rotterdam (spring and fall semester)
Veldacademie offers a graduation lab open for students of the Architecture and Urbanism track. Students can develop their own assignment, as long as it addresses an actual socio-spatial issue that is relevant for the development of the city of Rotterdam. Collaborative action research project is part of the studio, as well as an individual research and design project and the organization of an excursion to a European city.
