Coming August our partners TU Berlin and Home not Shelter! are organizing a summer school, together with multiple German universities. The topic of the International Summer Academy Mannheim 2019 is: 'Living together in complex societies'. Questions of an open society and questions about the possibilities of transitory living will be addressed.
HOW DO WE WANT TO LIVE TOGETHER?
The rapid expansion of our cities and the increasing pressure on the housing market are creating new neighbourhoods and quarters. The new urban resident asks for typologies between specific private needs and user neutrality. Well designed housing concepts address the demands of a dynamic urban society and create bridges between privacy and the public, individual living demands and the collective, the needs of today and living in the future. In the question of implementation, Frei Otto‘s way of thinking provides a theoretical approach to realize these concepts through an open process and iterative procedures.
The objective of the Summer Academy is to build experimental interventions on the questions of open society and temporary living in a collective and participative process, as well as the interdisciplinary development of integrative forms of cooperation for the appropriation of home.
The participants will develop modular [living] spaces, which will be built at scale 1:1 in the Multihalle Mannheim and which can be set up and managed seasonally in the Herzogenriedpark during the summer months. In the spirit of the rediscovery of Frei Otto’s Multihalle, the alcoves will be united underneath one roof. The temporary interventions consist of prototypical living modules that go beyond the familiar and create a spatial offer exceeding classical accommodation. Residents of the neighbouring districts are encouraged to participate actively in the workshop.
The application is open for students from all semesters and faculties. The project pursues an interdisciplinary approach. In addition to the actual construction of the housing experiments, strategies for manoeuvring the questions of home will be developed.
The program consist of a symposium and a design-build workshop. It's possible to sign up for only one of these parts. Veldacademie will participate with a team of students of different nationalities and study disciplines. If you are interested to be part of our team, please fill in this form.
