In the coming years the population of the Netherlands will face double aging figures. In anticipation to this development, the government is focusing on extramuralisation (care outside institution walls). The housing stock has to be changed to house the elderly people. This project ‘old and familiar’ answers the question ‘how older people can continue to live independently as long as possible.’
The location for this project is the area Oud-Charlois in Rotterdam. The needs in the area of the location of the house, the facilities, meeting places and the house itself has been studied, in order to make a design. On the basis of these results, criteria are difined for transform existing houses to houses for the elderly. The result is a multifunctional housing, care and welfare project.
