The recent closure of nursing homes in the Netherlands is a direct consequention of the tendency that elderly stay living at home longer. This might suggest that the meaning of these homes is decreasing. The opposite is true. Current institutions often play an important role in facilitating assisted living and participation in the neighbourhood.
The inventarisation 'Zicht op Zorghuisvesting' offers an overview of nursing homes in the city of Amsterdam. Thereby, the research explores the meaning these houses have for the different neighbourhoods. While developing a 'common language', the document serves as a starting point for dialogue between municipality, care organisations and housing associations. In this dialogue, the question is asked which role excisting houses can play in the housing of elderly citizens.
