In this minor, you will learn to understand health issues from the practical perspective of the metropolitan region. Together with a team, you will come up with solutions to a specific issue raised by various organisations in the city. You will substantiate your findings with literature studies and results from fieldwork. In addition to the group assignment at the organisation, you follow lectures and work at Erasmus University.
Veldacademie is one of the organisations that annually raises a topical issue for this minor and guides students in practical research. The issues vary in theme, but lie at the interface of health/healthy lifestyle and the spatial planning of the city. Students previously participated in the 'Happy Streets' mobility experiment, organised a meeting with health professionals in the context of digitisation in elderly care and carried out activities with young people to find out how the layout of the neighbourhood affects their mobility behaviour.
For the practical part of the assignment, you make contact with residents and stakeholders. You will learn to apply qualitative research methods to your fieldwork and receive training from the researchers at the Veldacademie. At the end, you will report your findings and present them to your fellow students, your supervisors and, if possible, the stakeholders involved.
For the group assignment you will work together with students from different backgrounds, such as health sciences, business administration and psychology. Third-year bachelor students from various study programmes and educational institutions may participate. For more information about applying, please refer to your study guide or the Erasmus University website.
The minor Public Health was developed within the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences and a joint product of the Erasmus School of Health Policy and Management and the Department of Social Healthcare of Erasmus MC.
