A1. What requirements do I need to meet to be able to graduate with Veldacademie?
To graduate with Veldacademie, you must be enrolled as a student at a WO or HBO institution and you must have permission from your educational institution to graduate. We also expect a lot of commitment, a sense of autonomy, an affinity with our field of work and a great deal of enthusiasm.
2. Do I develop my graduation assignment by myself or do I have to join an ongoing project of Veldacademie?
It can be either option but both options are not exclusive of each other. You can work with us on an assignment from a current research project. Often students come to us with their own research proposal and we always connect it to an ongoing assignment so that you can gain experience in the field. However, your research proposal will be required to have a social impact and reflect a current demand for the city of Rotterdam. If you have not defined a research question yet, but have a particular fascination for a (social) subject, we can brainstorm with you to formulate a question.
3.Does Veldacademie provide a mentor/advisor or do I need to find teachers from my field on my own?
For the content of your research or project you will have teachers from the institution that you are enrolled in. Veldacademie will offer practical guidance. We can help you connect with key figures in practice, to investigate and analyse data. In addition, we help you achieve results that have practical consequences.
4. Does Veldacademie have workplaces for students?
Yes. In fact, we expect you to organise your schedule to be present a few days a week at our office to work alongside our other employees, interns and students from different fields. This enables us to exchange knowledge easily and quickly, collaborate and engage you in interesting meetings internally and in the field.
5. Do I work alone on a project or together with other students?
You will work independently on your graduation project, but we will always help you find opportunities to connect with other students, among other things, through identifying overlapping teams. If you are an architecture student, you will also do a collaborative practical course (vakoefening). Such a practical assignment allows you to join a team and learn from our methods of research. This collaborative practical course is eligible to be awarded with credits.
6. How can I benefit from graduating with the Veldacademie?
When you graduate from Veldacademie you get extra guidance from a practical perspective, get to experience working in the field and connect to a large network of professionals. After your graduation, you will have many professional opportunities to explore through this extensive network.
7. What will be the outcome of the student research?
The research questions that you will be exploring are shared by professionals in practice; who are eagerly anticipating your results. You will always have the opportunity to present your research to people practicing in the professional field; they will carry forward your research. After graduating, our students will feel not only feel confident about their expertise but will leave having gained knowledge and experience that has real-time applications. 9. I am an architecture student. What are the rules of the game?
In the field of architecture, Veldacademie has its own Graduation Lab under TU Delft’s Master in Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences programme. You can develop your own assignment with us, as long as it answers a current and relevant issue for the city of Rotterdam. Veldacademie is an Architecture-wide Graduation Lab. This means that you can graduate with us for every master track, as long as your senior graduation mentor is from this master track? and the requirements of the master track are met. Veldacademie will be a part of your supervision team as a practical supervisor, alongside your senior mentor and research mentor.
To sign up, you need to register with the Course Code AR3VA110 during the registration period. Write a text on what you would like to research and/or design and how this topic would be relevant to Rotterdam.
After the registration period we will invite you for an intake interview. Following the interview, we will ask you to look for mentors who would be best suitable to guide you.
Veldacademie would like you to get off to a good start the beginning of the semester, therefore we would like to offer you the following next tips:
- Make sure you have an idea of what you would like to do and potentially try to research the topic in advance.
- Start approaching potential supervisors in advance.
- Look at previous student research and graduation projects on our website.

INternships
10. What requirements do I need to meet to do an internship with Veldacademie?
You must be enrolled as a student in a college (hogeschool) or a university (hbo or wo).
11. What work will I be doing during my internship at the Veldacademie?
As an intern you will work on ongoing projects. You will be guided by researchers involved in the project and will be explicitly a part of the team.
12. How many days per week of attendance will be expected from me?
At least 24 hours/week.
13. Will I receive a fee for my internship?
University (WO) students and University of Applied Sciences (HBO) students receive an internship fee of 530 euros per month (based on 36 hours/week).

14. What kind of clients does the Veldacademie have?
Veldacademie usually works to advise municipalities, housing corporations, health-care or well-being institutions and schools. But we also work with private parties such as real-estate developers and insurance companies.
15. What kind of expertise and background will my supervisors have?
Supervisors at Veldacademie have a background in Architecture/Urbanism and Sociology. But most importantly they are experienced in conducting fieldwork, setting up and executing qualitative research, organising meetings and analysing the results for practical use.
